The Morse Code Alphabet
Twenty-six letters, twenty-six rhythms. Below, each letter gets its code, its NATO phonetic name, an English-frequency rank (E is #1), a memory hook, and playable example words. Letters are listed in A–Z order — but if you're learning from scratch, follow the frequency ladder instead: start with E · and T –, add A ·– and N –·, then I ··, M ––… Each rung adds one dot or one dash, so you're never memorizing more than one new element at a time.

- The most common letters are the shortest. E (·) and T (–) are single symbols; A, I, M, N are two; most of the rest are four or five. Morse's designers counted letter frequencies in English before choosing codes — a century before "Huffman coding" formalized the same idea.
- Mirror pairs halve the work. E/T, A/N, I/M, D/U, B/V… learn one and flip dots↔dashes for the other.
- Reversal pairs like A (·–) vs W (·––) differ by one symbol. Chunk the alphabet into families (the "A family" A·–, W·––, J·–––, P·––·, R·–·, L·–··) and you learn seven letters as one pattern plus a tail.

NATO names: the other alphabet
Each card shows a second name — Alfa, Bravo, Charlie… — the NATO radiotelephony alphabet used for spelling words out loud on voice channels. The two alphabets solve the same problem (unambiguous communication) with different tools: NATO uses whole words that survive bad phone lines ("B as in Bravo"), morse uses rhythms that survive bad radio. Every letter page here pairs the two, because in the real world they travel together — a ham might spell a callsign in NATO words on voice, then send it in morse on CW.
Non-English letters exist too
International Morse covers more than A–Z: accented letters have their own patterns — Ä (·−·−), É (··−··), Ü (··−−), Ñ (−−·−−) — and other scripts have full parallel codes (Japanese Wabun, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic). English traffic never touches them, but they explain some otherwise-mysterious punctuation shapes: several "punctuation" patterns began as non-English letters. A learning order that actually works
A-to-Z feels natural and teaches badly. Use one of these three orders instead: frequency-first (the card order above — E, T, A, O… highest-value rhythms first), Koch order (K, M, R, S, U… dissimilar sounds that force real listening, used by our Koch trainer), or family-first (learn A, then its relatives R, L, W, J, P for free). Frequently asked questions
Why do common letters have shorter codes?
Design efficiency: the code's creators counted letter frequencies in English print and assigned the shortest patterns to the heaviest traffic — E and T are single symbols, rare letters like Q and J carry four or five. A century later, computer science would call this a prefix code; in 1840 it was just good engineering.
Do capital and lowercase letters differ?
No — morse has no case. A and a are both ·−. What LOOKS like case in written morse is just typography; the code carries rhythm, not lettershapes.
How long does the full alphabet take to learn?
By ear with daily practice: the alphabet in 1–2 weeks, comfortable fluency in 2–3 months. By eye from a chart: faster to "know", permanent plateau at slow speeds. Choose ears — every page on this site plays audio for exactly that reason.
