Why learn a letter ranked #19?
Honesty first: W sits around #19 in English letter-frequency tables — roughly 2% of running text, the same neighborhood as B and G. By pure frequency logic, W shouldn't get priority over a dozen other letters. So why over-learn it?
Three real reasons. Question-word payload: the wh- family — what, when, where, which, who, why — puts W at the head of the interrogative backbone of English. Three mistakes that break W
- Shrinking the second dash. If the final dah comes up short, the ear hears a broken R followed by a stray T — the letter loses its double-swell outline. Both dahs: three units, no negotiation.
- Growing W into J. One extra dash — even a half-length one sent out of habit — turns W (· − −) into J (· − − −). It's W's signature error; if a receiving op asks “W or J?” twice, return to the wh- rotation drill and let the fixed vocabulary re-seat the length.
- Letting W blur into the digit 1. The digit 1 is · − − − − — W with two more dashes welded on. In callsigns and serial numbers, W and 1 live side by side; drill the pair with the number set until the dash-count pops out at you.
