What is the Morse code for the letter A?
In International Morse Code, the letter A is written · − — one dot followed by one dash. By hand or in text you'll often see it as .- or di-dah. It is deliberately short: code designers in the 1840s counted letter frequencies in printed English and gave the most common letters the shortest patterns, a full century before computer scientists formalized the same idea as Huffman coding.

What does A sound like? (rhythm before symbols)
Skilled operators don't hear “a dot, then a dash.” They hear di-dah — one quick beat, one long beat, glued together. The rhythm *is* the letter. If you train yourself to say “di-dah” out loud until it feels like one syllable, you've learned A the way radio operators actually use it — by ear, not by decoding symbols.

Why is A worth over-learning?
Three reasons A pays back extra practice. First, frequency: A is the #3 most common letter in English (about 8% of everything you read), behind only E (·) and T (−). Every minute spent drilling A is reused constantly in real traffic. Second, it's the minimal complete example — the shortest possible pattern that contains both a dot *and* a dash, which makes it the perfect calibration letter: if your dashes aren't 3× your dots, A is where you'll hear it first. The A family: learn one pattern, own six letters
Here is the trick most chart-memorizers never notice. Six letters of the alphabet begin with the same two elements, · −:
Lock in di-dah and you only ever have to track *what comes after it*. This is chunking, the same way readers see “th-” as one unit. How to practice A (three methods that work)
Two or three short sessions a day beat one long one; boredom is the enemy of rhythm. That principle scales all the way up to full words and phrases practice.
- Send it daily for one week — 2 minutes. Muscle memory beats cramming. Tap di-dah on a table while coffee brews; your fingers learn the 1:3 ratio without your brain attending.

Prosigns: A inside operator shorthand

Common mistakes when learning A
- Making the dash “a bit longer” instead of 3×. If your dash is 2 units, a listener hears A wobbling toward something unreadable. Count it: dot-dot-dot inside one dash.
- Pausing between the dot and the dash. A is one letter with a 1-unit gap inside it. A 3-unit gap turns it into E T (· − as two letters). This is the #1 beginner error in sent code.
- Learning by eye only. Reading · − on the chart is step zero; the skill is recognizing di-dah by ear at speed. Every session should include listening, not just writing.
A bit of history: why A was an early test letter
When Morse and Vail were proving the telegraph line between Washington and Baltimore in 1844, simple unambiguous patterns like E (·), T (−), and A (· −) were the natural first traffic — short enough to send on crude keys, distinct enough to verify through noisy circuits. A dot-dash pair was the minimal test that proved *both* elements and the timing between them survived the wire. The famous first formal message — “What hath God wrought” — was itself spelled largely from short, high-frequency letters like A.
Nearly two centuries later the same economy holds: short code for common letters is why Morse remains efficient for SOS and emergency signaling with the most primitive equipment — a torch, a whistle, a tapped pipe.

Is A in Morse code the same everywhere in the world?
Yes — in International Morse Code, A is always · − (di-dah). Some non-Latin scripts (Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic) have their own letter assignments, but wherever the Latin A is used, including all amateur radio traffic, it is dot-dash.
How fast should I be able to recognize A?
Immediately — A is short enough that at any sane speed it should land as one unit of sound, not as a countable dot and dash. If you find yourself counting elements, slow the letters down using Farnsworth timing (fast characters, wide gaps) rather than stretching the characters themselves.
What's the difference between A (· −) and N (− ·)?
