How to read the chart
A dot (·) is one unit of sound; a dash (–) is exactly three units. Inside a letter, symbols are separated by one unit of silence; between letters, three units; between words, seven. The letters below are ordered by English letter frequency (E is most common) — frequency-ordered learning is faster than A-to-Z, because short codes map to common letters: E = ·, T = –, A = ·–, N = –·.
Digits follow one simple rule
Digits 1–4 start with that many dots and fill the rest with dashes; 5 is all dots; 6–9 mirror the pattern starting with dashes; 0 is five dashes. Once you know the trick you never re-memorize a digit: count the dots.
Punctuation worth knowing
The most-used marks are the period (·–·–·–), comma (––··––) and question mark (··––··). Question mark is the easiest to recognize on air — it sounds genuinely puzzled.
Prosigns — morse's shorthand
Operators compress common phrases into single unbroken symbols called prosigns: AR (·–·–·) means "end of message", SK (···–·–) means "end of contact", BT (–···–) is a paragraph break, and SOS (···–––···) is the distress call sent as one symbol. See the SOS signal page for the full story.
Why the chart looks the way it does
The table is not random, and neither is the code. When the alphabet was designed in the 1840s, someone counted letter frequencies in printed English (the surviving account points to a printer's type case) and spent the shortest signals on the heaviest traffic: E and T got one element each, the next-commonest got two, and the rare letters — Q, J, X — carry four or five. A century before computer science named the idea "Huffman coding", telegraphy was already doing it. That's also why this chart orders letters by frequency: you learn the highest-value rhythms first.
The 1865 International standard (ITU-R M.1677, still current) locked the patterns you see here. A handful of characters — the comma, the apostrophe, the fraction slash — date from wire-era traffic conventions, and the newest entry is the @ sign (·–·–·), added in 2004 so email addresses could be sent by ham radio. The code's history has its own controversies — who really designed it — and the story is worth reading.
Three ways to use this chart well
- Don't memorize it visually. Click characters, listen, and say each rhythm aloud (di-dah). Chart-learning with the eyes builds the counting habit that plateaus at 10 WPM; ear-learning scales. The learn page explains the method.
- Learn in structural pairs. Half the alphabet comes in twins: A/N and I/M swap dots for dashes; D/U and B/V read each other backwards. Meet them as pairs and they can't contaminate each other.
- Print it as a prop, not a textbook. The cheat sheet shines as a reference beside your drills — check, then close it and use your ears again. For structured practice, the games hold the real curriculum.

Frequently asked questions
Is this chart the same worldwide?
Yes — International Morse (ITU-R M.1677) is used globally. The historical American "railroad" morse differs slightly for some characters, but everything on this chart is the international standard used in amateur radio, aviation beacons, and everywhere else today.
Can I print this as a cheat sheet?
Yes — the print button produces a clean black-on-white A4 layout with all letters, digits and key punctuation. Laminate it and keep it in your go-bag: in an emergency, a printed chart plus any light source is a distress transmitter.
How many characters are there in total?
26 letters, 10 digits, and a working set of punctuation (period, comma, question mark and friends) plus procedural signals. Non-English extensions exist for accented letters — å, é, ü — each with its own pattern in the international tables.
