Prosigns — the punctuation of the air

How fast do operators send? WPM levels decoded
Speed in CW is words per minute (WPM), standardized on the word PARIS — five beats of average rhythm per word. The skill ladder as it actually feels on the air: 5–10 WPM is beginner exchange speed, workable for patient QSOs and the level where QRS etiquette (slowing down for the other station) carries you. 13–18 WPM is comfortable conversational speed — most casual rag-chews live here. 20–25 WPM is fluent; contest operators exchange at this speed under noise and adrenaline. 30–40+ WPM is elite copying, usually with paddle and keyer, common in serious contesting and high-speed clubs. Do you still need morse code for a ham license?
