But spend time on the air and you discover a third category hiding in plain hearing: short, fused bursts that carry no text at all. They tell the other station *I'm finished*, *go ahead*, *you specifically*, *new paragraph*, *I made a mistake*, *this conversation is over*. Operators call them prosigns — procedural signals — and they are the grammar of a language everyone learns the vocabulary of first.

The defining feature is not the meaning — it is the fusion. A prosign is sent as a single unbroken character, with *no gap between its letters*. Take AR. Sent as the prosign AR, it is .-.-. keyed as one continuous run, a single gesture of the hand. The same dots and dashes, an entirely different symbol. On the air you hear the difference instantly; the prosign has no seam.

Because ordinary typography has no way to write "letters fused together," prosigns get special notation in print. The classic convention writes them with an overline — AR with a bar above it — or spells the fusion out in other ways, and transcription habits grew up around the common ones: operators copying a net by hand traditionally rendered BT as an equals sign and AR as a plus sign, because writing the fusion was impossible and everyone knew what the mark meant. What surrounds the core: K, AS and the erasure sign

Around the core orbits a second ring you will meet early. K (-., sent alone, *not* fused) is the plain invitation *go ahead, anyone*. AS (.-...) means *wait*. HH (eight dots, ........) is the erasure sign — *ignore what I just sent, I'll repeat* — and its frantic skitter is one of the most human sounds on any band. Why do prosigns exist at all?

Because a telegraph circuit carries no tone of voice. When two people share a wire or a frequency, they need an explicit, unambiguous way to manage the channel itself: who speaks, when a message ends, when a turn passes, when a transmission is broken. Speech does this with pitch, pause and eye contact; morse does it with rhythm. What is prosign etiquette on the air?

The rules are few and mostly unwritten, which is exactly why they function as manners: everyone notices when they're broken. End your transmissions with K or KN, not with silence. An unbroken carrier-release leaves the other station guessing whether you finished or faded; the invitation sign closes the turn cleanly. Use KN in a scheduled contact or a net when you want your specific correspondent back — it politely mutes the rest of the frequency — and plain K when the floor is open. Close a contact with SK, not AR; SK means *this whole conversation is finished*, and using it correctly signals to anyone tuning by that the frequency is about to become free.

Inside longer messages, BT replaces the paragraphs you would indent on paper, keeping a wall of keyed text navigable by ear. And when you fluff a word, HH — eight quick dots — is the honest confession; you then back up to the last BT or word boundary and send it again. Old operators will tell you the prosigns are where "fist" lives: two stations can send identical text and still sound completely different in their manners.
